WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
USDA-NIFA Director Speaks at Centennial Celebration –
Extension in the 21st Century was the theme of Sonny Ramaswamy’s presentation
at the USDA Cooperative Extension Centennial celebration last week in
Washington, DC. View his presentation at
http://nifa-connect.nifa.usda.gov/p3n5jte2826/.
There is roughly 10 minutes of lead in to Dr. Ramaswamy's speech. Enjoy his comments.
Liberty Hyde Bailey. This week, in celebration of 100 years of Cooperative
Extension, I challenge you to read about one of those individuals who is
attributed as a catalyst in establishing many Extension Services across the
nation with his role in President Theodore Roosevelt’s “Commission on Country
Life.” Liberty Hyde Bailey was a
horticulturalist, educator, scientist, and advocate for experiential learning. Search his name and find much more
information about this influential man in the history of Cooperative Extension.
I recently heard one of his quotes that truly resonates:
“Extension work is not exhortation. Nor is it exploitation
of the people, or advertising of an institution, or publicity work for securing
students. It is a plain, earnest, and continuous effort to meet the needs of
the people on their own farms and in the localities.” Quote from Liberty Hyde Bailey.

DO YOU NEED A NEW NAME BADGE..ORDER BY SEPTEMBER 26
All
participants attending the upcoming Annual Conference, October 21-23,
2014, will be asked to wear their K-State Research and Extension
name badges.
If you have never received a name badge, if you
still have one of the old variety, or if you wish to purchase a new
badge, email Sue Robinson, srobinso@ksu.edu.
Be
sure to specify the kind of backing you want - magnet, clip or pin -
and specify how you want your name on the badge. There is not room for
titles, but department, area, county, district, research center, etc., will
be shown.
Each new employee, at
the instructor level or above, receives his/her first name badge free
of charge. Counties, districts, areas and departments are encouraged to
order name badges for other employees and will be invoiced in the
amount of $4.50 for each name badge.
If a new name badge is
needed, please order by September 26, so you can receive them in time for
Annual Conference. --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
KSRE ADOBE CONNECT WEBINAR TRAINING: SEPTEMBER 17 AND 24
Using an online web conferencing tool is a great method for reaching out and delivering information to your colleagues and audiences. K-State offers Zoom as a simple tool for online meetings and webinars. KSRE has also offered Adobe Connect for several years as a powerful online communication tool.
Zoom and Adobe Connect will also save you time, travel and money! These communication tools can reach your audience via
the Internet and on mobile devices. Connect is particularly valuable to record
and save your presentations for online
playback at any time 24/7.
Adobe Connect training is being offered Wednesdays, September 17 and 24, online at 9 a.m. Look for Zoom training later this Fall.
This one-hour session is a
good overview for both new and experienced Connect users. No
registration is necessary. Simply go to http://connect.ksre.ksu.edu/connecttraining/ and sign-in as a guest during the training time.
KSRE Adobe Connect is free for
KSRE and College of Agriculture to use for online meetings, research
collaboration, giving online classes and for
online presentations, "webinars."
