WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Happy New Year! Welcome back. I hope you had a good holiday break. The Bowl game was a bit disappointing, but couldn't be more proud of how the team worked themselves back into the game in the second half. Truly, through adversity, it is easy to give up. Perseverance, character, and commitment of the entire team was what I saw throughout that game. A great lesson to take home for all of us when faced with challenges in our work or in our personal life. It didn't result in a win, but the response to the adversity was very much a winning response! Go Cats!
I'm also one who isn't really into making New Year's resolutions. However, one of my weaknesses is in effectively verbalizing appreciation, support, thanks, and gratitude. Then our pastor's sermon last Sunday contained stories of how persons respond when given sincere encouragement, appreciation, and trust. I thought of what those words meant for the way in which I convey genuine compliments and encouragement to others. And, how such a message can be so important also to all the volunteers, board members, and those who help in any way to continuously improve the work of Extension. While I don't think of it as a New Year's resolution, the timing of making this commitment personally could be considered as such. I just don't want to lose the commitment after 6 weeks, as is the nature of the greatest majority of resolutions! :)
Board Excellence Newsletter
The Winter 2015 edition of the Board Excellence newsletter was emailed on January 5 to local extension board members, State Extension Advisory
Council
members
and agents. The purpose of the newsletter is to
strengthen and equip local boards for their responsibilities.
I would encourage agents to work with the board chair in re-enforcing the contents of the newsletter at board meetings.

RECRUITING FOR ONLINE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT COURSE
K-State Research and Extension’s
success relies on volunteers to assist in delivering Extension programs. Yet
research reports that nearly 1/3 of volunteers choose not to continue
volunteering because of poor management practices. In a recent presentation,
Rod Buchele reported that hiring staff who have limited knowledge and
experience in working with volunteers is one of the “7 Deadly Sins in
Volunteerism.”
We are recruiting four (4) KSRE
Extension professionals for a pilot cohort to participate in an online program designed for novice Extension professionals working with
volunteers: Achieving the Extension Mission Through Volunteers Pilot - March 6 – April 23, 2015.
Marketing for Program Leaders Course At A Glance We are recruiting for two
experienced Extension staff working with volunteers and two novice Extension
staff with two or less years of working with volunteers. For the pilot
cohort only, experienced staff participants will be asked to participate in the
online course and validate the content. During this six-week course
members participate in pre-recorded sessions, readings, activities and three live
webinars, interact with a wide variety of resources
and hear from content experts. Each module will require approximately five
hours each week.
Achieving the Extension Mission Through Volunteers is
an online cohort course for the extension professionals working with volunteers
to enhance and deliver Extension programs. The course
was designed by Extension specialists in the North Central region with
volunteer management content knowledge.
It is designed to highlight best practices in volunteer
development and management and to help build staff
and organizational capacity around volunteer management and development
regardless of the program area. Participants will increase volunteer management competencies; build knowledge and skills related to identifying,
recruiting, selecting, and supporting volunteers; and understand their own approach; the organization’s
philosophy related to volunteerism, and current volunteerism trends.
Interested? Please send a message
to Barbara Stone, bjstone@ksu.edu,
indicating your interest and ability to commit the time to the pilot cohort. --Gregg Hadley, Jim Lindquist, Paula Peters and Barbara Stone, Assistant Directors, K-State Research and Extension
