2013 WORLD FOOD PRIZE WINNER TO SPEAK AT K-STATE JANUARY 26
Robert Fraley, who led a team of Monsanto scientists that developed plant biotechnology in 1983, has been chosen to be the first speaker
in Kansas State University’s Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems Lecture series. In
2013, Fraley and two colleagues received the prestigious World Food
Prize for their achievements in founding, developing and applying modern
agricultural biotechnology.
Fraley will speak at 7 p.m.
on Monday, January 26, in McCain Auditorium. The lecture is free and open
to students, faculty, staff and the public. Fraley’s talk is titled, “2050: Agriculture’s Role In Mitigating Global Challenges."
Information and links to a live videostream will be available online at www.k-state.edu/globalfood.
In 1983, Fraley and three other
Monsanto scientists were the first to genetically modify plants, and 13
years later, he helped to lead the successful commercial launch of
Roundup Ready soybeans and Bollgard insect-protected cotton in the
United States.
By 2013, Fraley’s work in this area
contributed to crops growing on more than 175 million hectares (more
than 430 million acres) around the world by 18 million farmers. More
than 90 percent of the farmers are small, resource-poor farmers in
developing countries.
The new lecture series has been endowed by the Gardiner family and is created by K-State Research and Extension/College of Agriculture.

KSRE ADOBE CONNECT ENDING MAY 2015
Last month Gerry Snyder indicated that we were evaluating our Adobe Connect license as part of our integration with Information Technology Services. Part of the integration is to look at providing online communication services while reducing duplication where possible.
Adobe has changed the licensing structure of Connect making it now cost prohibitive from both licensing costs and management requirements. Because of this, KSRE will be discontinuing the Adobe Connect System on May 1, 2015.
We are recommending the K-State Zoom web conferencing system as the replacement for Connect. Zoom allows you to schedule rooms on your own for meetings up to 25 people. For meetings which require 100 seats or 500 seats, you will need to schedule those through Shelley Troyer, shelleytroyer@ksu.edu. Zoom has many of the same features as Connect including screen sharing, chat and recording your meetings. By default the recordings are stored on the local computer, but a recent update allows you to store your recordings in the cloud and make them available.
If you need to save your Connect recordings, follow the procedure that Gerry has put together at Saving Connect Recordings, http://www.ksre.ksu.edu/Technology/p.aspx?tabid=882.
Resources for Zoom are available from: Accessing Zoom Tech Tip on Zoom Web Conferencing Handout on Zoom Zoom Support Center
If you have questions about moving your recordings form the Adobe Connect system, please contact Gerry Snyder, gsnyder@ksu.edu. If you have questions about the Zoom web conferencing system, please contact Shelley Troyer, shelleytroyer@ksu.edu. --Joe Lear learj@ksu.edu
