14TH ANNUAL CAMBIO DE COLORES CONFERENCE (LATINOS IN THE HEARTLAND) CALL FOR PROPOSALS
Cambio de Colores - Latinos in the Heartland 2015 Conference Shaping the Future: Leadership for Inclusive Communities June 10-12, 2015 Kansas City, Missouri —Call for Presentations— The Call for Presentations for the Cambio de Colores 2015 conference is now available (http://bit.ly/1AP5aiU). Submit your abstract at www.cambiodecolores.org through February 26.
About the Cambio de Colores 2015 Conference
This year’s theme, “Shaping the Future: Leadership for Inclusive Communities,” seeks to highlight the important role of leaders within Latino and immigrant communities and the contributions they make in creating strong and resilient places. We are also interested in how leadership in receiving communities is organizing to make communities inclusive to all their members. As our communities continue to change with the push and pull factors that cause demographic shifts in places across the country, it is inclusive leadership that can truly shape the future well-being of our communities. This year we are very interested in the research and best practices/proven programs related to supporting multi-generational leaders and developing inclusive communities.
Cambio de Colores Conference is targeted at practitioners, Extension Agents, researchers, and anyone who wants to learn more about reaching new audiences. Send in your Presentation Proposal by February 26, 2015. --Debra Bolton dbolton@ksu.edu
CHARITABLE RAFFLES FOR NON-PROFITS
Last November, Kansans voted to amend the state’s constitution to permit the legislature to authorize charitable raffles operated or conducted by religious, charitable, fraternal, educational, and veterans nonprofit organizations. While the measure was approved by 75% of the voters, it only laid the groundwork by creating an exception in the constitution to allow raffles for these types of organizations.
It is anticipated that during the 2015 Legislative Session, lawmakers will create the statutes regulating raffles according to the Department of Revenue website. Items they may consider include: raffle license fees and requirements, how often organizations can conduct raffles, if sales tax will be charged on raffle tickets, requirements for printing tickets, etc.
Until these statutes are determined and the laws take effect, (which will likely happen July 2015) the Department of Revenue has determined that raffles of all types remain illegal. --Justin Wiebers jwiebers@ksu.edu

KANSAS AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STATION UNVEILS NEW PLATFORM FOR PUBLISHING RESEARCH REPORTS
K-State Research and Extension Agricultural Experiment
Station researchers on campus and at centers around the state conduct studies
in nearly all areas of agricultural production. Preliminary reports of research
results are now available through KAES Research Reports, an online publication
hosted by New Prairie Press at the K-State Libraries.
Current issues are dedicated to field and fertilizer
research around the state and to beef cattle research. Reports will be posted
as they become available for issues throughout the year dedicated to projects
from the Southeast Agricultural Research Center (beef cattle, forage crops,
soil and water management, and cropping systems), Southwest Research-Extension
Center (cropping and tillage systems, soil fertility, weed science, and
irrigation), Agricultural Research Center–Hays (beef cattle), and K-State turfgrass,
swine, and dairy teams.
Follow @KAESRR on Twitter for updates on reports and visit newprairiepress.org/kaesrr
to view and download recent reports and issues dedicated to individual topics.
Please contact AES Editor Sarah Caldwell Hancock at sarhan@ksu.edu with questions. New
Prairie Press was founded by Kansas State University Libraries in 2007, joining
a growing number of libraries that are entering the world of open access
publishing. More information about New Prairie Press is available at newprairiepress.org. --Sarah Caldwell Hancock
MARIE'S PICKS . . .
This week my pick is a success story from Jonie James, McPherson County:
I had a homeowner who really took pride in his lawn. He kept struggling
to get his lawn to be more "green" in color. He had applied nitrogen,
phosphorus, and potassium, and admitted to even over applying the
nitrogen in order to see if it would increase the "green" color. His
efforts were proving unsuccessful. After he attended an educational
session on lawn management, he checked out the soil probe and submitted a
lawn soil sample. The recommendations he received were to not apply
any additional phosphorus or potassium, and to only apply 1 lb of actual
nitrogen per 1000 square feet in September and November. He was also
made aware of the fact the pH was too high, and it was recommended he
apply sulfur to his lawn to help lower the pH.
He applied the recommended sulfur early in the year, and called the
office in June to say he had the best looking lawn he has ever had, and
all he had applied thus far was the sulfur. He thanked the office for
not only saving him money, but also for getting him the information he
needed to achieve the "green" color he so wanted in his lawn. --Marie Blythe mblythe@ksu.edu
