WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Spring Break is upon us on the K-State Campus. Gets really quiet for a week, and I too am out for a few days.
Let me begin by saying thanks to a whole lot of you, as you have stepped into very important educational roles across the state, whether it be with help in understanding the farm bill and all the decision options that must be made, or facilitating local goal discussions on the 50 year water plan. I know these initiatives have cut across our traditional lines of expertise, and I am so proud of how you have all responded. Walk Kansas has just kicked off as well, and I look forward to hearing about the thousands of team members stepping up to that challenge. I truly appreciate all you do to make K-State Research and Extension the best it can possibly be in serving the needs
In contrast, I thought it would be good to point you to a recent "Thought For The Day"
by Kirk Weisler. Takes me back to when we had Kirk Weisler, Chief
Morale Officer, as a keynote at our KSRE Annual Conference, and
promoting his book on leadership entitled "The Dog Poop Initiative." Kirk recently offered a different perspective on this leadership book with
respect to peer pressure and its effect on an individuals decision about taking the initiative to fix a problem. Peers may tell you it's not your problem to fix, or that they sure wouldn't do it, and puts a guilt trip on you if you did follow through.
Caused me to
reflect, and hope it might cause you to reflect as well. Any time
you've known there was something you should have done, big or small, but
didn't because of your concern for peer pressure?? I wish it hadn't,
but honestly, It has happened to me! Take initiative every day and do
the right thing! I find that the best feelings come later when you know you did the right thing, and for the most part no else knows you even did it!!
Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu
WEB SERVERS TO BE UPDATED ON FRIDAY, MARCH 20
To correct issues with the KSRE web servers, we will need to perform an update to the systems beginning Friday, March 20, at 2 p.m. This will require shutting down the systems and access to all the web sites maintained on the KSRE webservers.
The upgrade will mean all the web sites will be down during the upgrade. This will include the KSRE bookstore, KSRE on-line as well as the county, district, and area sites, as well as the 4-H and KSRE main site.
The update will take several hours but should be back on-line by Saturday morning. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but the maintenance needs to be performed to keep the systems running while we transition to the K-State CMS.
If you have any questions, please let me know. --Joe Lear learj@ksu.edu
2015 KANSAS JUNIOR LIVESTOCK SHOW OCTOBER 2-4
The 2015 Kansas Junior Livestock Show will be October 2-4, 2015, at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. This new date, along with the new enhanced location, will allow the show to continue to grow. For 82 years the KJLS has been held in Wichita, at various locations. The Kansas Coliseum has been home for the past 36 years. Due to the sale of Sam Fulco Pavillion, which housed the sheep, swine and goats, a new location was required for the show to continue. After site visits to other parts of the state, the KJLS board of directors voted to change location to the State Fair grounds, as it is the only facility in Kansas designed to hold and show the 1,700 plus head of livestock that is entered in the annual show.
The 2014 show had 760 4-H and FFA members from 90 counties that exhibited 126 market steers, 308 breeding heifers, 322 market hogs, 131 breeding gilts, 275 market lambs, 220 breeding ewes, 236 meat goats and 105 commercial doe kids, plus the steers and heifers in the Kansas Livestock Foundation Club Calf Sale.
The Mid-American Classic Livestock Judging Contest had 424 contestants, representing 34 colleges from 15 different states and is also hosted at the KJLS.
A block of hotel rooms has been reserved at two hotels in Hutchinson during the show weekend. They are:
Hampton Inn Hutchinson, 1401 1/2 East 11th St., 620-665-9800 for $89.95 plus tax per night and
Ramada Inn Hutchinson, 1400 N. Lorraine St., 620-669-9311 for $79 plus tax per night.
Camper spots may be reserved by contacting Anthea Bryant at the State Fairgrounds office and rooms can be reserved at the Encampment Building for $11.25 per person per night by calling Anthea Bryant at 620-669-3608.
Exhibitors, parents, and Extension agents who have questions may contact show coordinators Rhonda McCurry and Betsy Anderson at rbkjls@gmail.com, or visit the KJLS web at www.kjls.org. --Dale Lanham dlanham@ksu.edu
