WORD FROM THE ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR - EXTENSION AND APPLIED RESEARCH
Focusing on advisories, focused programming, and audience involvement. Thank
you for the outstanding series of trainings to enhance and improve our work with Program Development Committees and Advisories that happened over the
past two weeks. Participation was excellent, and the content was so
relevant to needs. I sense from feedback that the PDC task force did indeed hit the mark. My sense was that the format brought out critical thinking and created a new level of interest and desire to work
more effectively with PDCs in creating the believers, advocates, and
champions for Extension programming throughout the state! The resources that have been created and made available to everyone
are outstanding. To locate those resources, follow this link.
The content is relevant and useful to anyone thinking of using advisory committees to help drive your focused Extension programming.
My thanks to the PDC task force which includes Linda Beech, Carl Garten, Kaitlyn Peine, Jeanne Falk Jones, Laurie Chandler, Rebecca McMahon, David Hallauer, Fran Richmond, Trudy Rice, Gayle Price, Gregg Hadley, Stacey Warner, Dale Fjell, and Chris Onstad. I appreciate your
work, and look forward to the momentum towards continuous improvement in
the engagement of PDCs at the local level.
Special Thank you! You'll note in the message below from the Kansas Department of Agriculture and the Kansas Water Office Water Vision Team, the word of thanks to all the Extension agents and faculty who stepped up to provide expertise and support in facilitating the development of local goals for public water supply conservation and protection for now and into the long term future. I want to echo my thanks to each of you for your leadership in this information gathering and planning process! Very well done!
Have a great week! --Daryl Buchholz dbuchhol@ksu.edu

ADDRESSING THE GRAND CHALLENGE OF COMMUNITY VITALITY -THE KANSAS PRIDE PROGRAM
Last week Marie's Picks featured the following:
In 2014, 65 Kansas PRIDE communities engaged in 503 ongoing and 153 completed projects at the local level. Kansas PRIDE communities reported that 259 of these projects engaged youths. In 2014, Kansas PRIDE communities reported 63,054 hours of volunteerism. This conservatively calculates to a dollar value of more than $1,316,567. Kansas PRIDE communities reported raising $338,555 for reinvestments in their communities during 2014.
You may be aware of the Kansas PRIDE program, or you may not.
Why is it important to communities across Kansas? Do you have PRIDE in your county/district? How can Kansas PRIDE benefit your Extension work? How can Kansas communities benefit from your work?
Join us for webinars on Monday, April 20, and Thursday, April 23, at 3 p.m. for answers to your questions and to find out how your work, county or district, can benefit or currently benefit from Kansas PRIDE: https://ksu.zoom.us/j/490700439. --Jaime Menon, Community Vitality/Kansas PRIDE, jmenon@ksu.edu

PLEASE HOLD THE DATE: OCTOBER 12, 2015
On behalf of our committee, I am pleased to announce that
the second Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems Lecture will take place at
7 p.m. in McCain Auditorium on Monday night, October 12, 2015.
We have invited Greg Page, Executive Chairman of Cargill, to
deliver the lecture and he has accepted. Mr. Page will speak about
Climate Risk and the threat it poses to Midwestern agriculture, hiring young
well-trained people, and some other related challenges to feeding the world by
2050/2100.
The school year of 2015/16 marks the 20th year of
the KSU/Cargill Higher Education Initiative. The partnership started with
the College of Agriculture, branched out to include Engineering and later
Business. More recently, Cargill has been the primary funder of diversity
efforts across campus. Our partnership is strong and Cargill is well
known on campus.
Our first speaker on January 26, 2015 was Dr. Robert T.
Fraley, 2013 World Food Prize Winner, Senior Vice President and Chief
Technology Officer with Monsanto. Meetings with graduate students, university
administrators and donors plus the lecture went extremely well.
We look
forward to a second successful Henry C. Gardiner Global Food Systems Lecture. --Steven Graham sgraham@k-state.edu
