Diversity Programs Office Update and Thank Yous

Submitted by Zelia Wiley & Lonnie Hobbs, Jr.

Growing Our Mindset: Why Diversity in Agriculture Matters

The Diversity Programs Office (DPO) would like to thank all who attended and supported the 2019 Wallace Kidd Diversity Award. In partnership with the K-State MANRRS Chapter, the recipients of the award were Dr. J. Ernie Minton, Interim Dean for the College of AG and Director of KSRE; and Dr. Zelia Wiley, Assistant Dean/Director for Diversity. The event took place on February 13, at 6 p.m. in 137 Waters Hall. Congratulations to both of our honorees!

The purpose of this biennial award is to recognize outstanding diversity accomplishments of faculty, staff and students at Kansas State University. Recipients have demonstrated a commitment to diversity on-campus or in the community through mentoring, outreach initiatives and other activities which advance the institution’s goal of inclusion. This award was established in memory of Wallace Ray Kidd. Kidd was a family man, community leader, and the first African-American graduate from the Department of Entomology. He set an example for everyone, students, adults, faculty, community, black and white. This Award is truly a fitting commemoration of his legacy and commitment.

In celebration of Women’s History Month and in collaboration with AG student leadership, we are pleased to announce the fourth iteration of “Growing Our Mindset: Why Diversity Matters in the College of Agriculture” Forum. This year’s event will be sponsored by Compass Minerals. Our guest speaker will be Angela Jones, Senior Vice President for People and Culture at Compass Minerals. The purpose of this event is to engage students and faculty members in an open dialogue and presentation regarding diversity and inclusion in the academic, work, and everyday setting. The event will take place on March 5, 2019 at 4:30 p.m. in Town Hall, Leadership Studies building. This promises to be an event which is informative and engaging to all who attend.

Please continue to look for more diversity news and events as we continue to advertise. We appreciate your support. For more information about upcoming events or to collaborate with the DPO, please call 785-532-5793 or contact the DPO staff, Lonnie Hobbs, Jr. or Dr. Zelia Wiley, Assistant Dean.
