Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are an essential part of every cooperative extension network. At K-State Research and Extension, we offer a variety of opportunities to get involved. For more information, contact your local extension office.
4-H Volunteer Opportunities
Kansas 4-H invites you to make the difference in the life of a young person. Volunteers make 4-H possible through the passion, skills and talents they share with young people. 4-H Volunteers are screened and receive ongoing training. Assisted by local staff, they guide youth learning using research-backed curriculum.

Serving on a Local Extension Board
The partnership between K-State and the local Extension Board is unique and is one of the strengths of K-State Research and Extension.
This relationship produces high quality educational programs for the people of Kansas.
Local Extension Boards rely on community volunteers to provide the necessary foundation for successful Extension leadership and programming in the communities they serve. To learn more about serving on an Extension Board, please contact your local office.
Master Community Facilitator
Facilitation is a core skill for extension professionals, community leaders, and volunteers.
Facilitation makes it easier to have conversations with people with different points of view, about how to identify and reduce problems, make plans and set goals.
To learn more about the facilitation process or to request information about our Master Community Facilitator training, please contact the Community Vitality team.
Master Food Volunteer
The Kansas Master Food Volunteer (MFV) Program provides a foundation of knowledge to volunteers in the subject areas of food safety, food science, food preparation, and food preservation. People with interests in food, cooking and nutrition take their expertise to a higher level while developing new avenues for helping in the community.
Local MFV programs:
Master Gardener
Extension Master Gardener volunteers work closely with K-State Research and Extension agents to annually deliver more than 90,000 hours of home lawn, garden and landscaping education to their communities through a variety of activities.
Extension Master Gardeners may assist with:
- Demonstration gardens
- Garden hotlines
- Youth outreach
- Community events
- Public presentations
- Plant sales
The Master Gardener program is a volunteer program in which K-State Research and Extension "trades" classroom training for volunteer time.
