Recruiting Local Extension Board Members
Being part of Kansas communities is a founding principle of K-State Extension. For example, local residents are elected to fill board positions for extension districts and councils.
The election process is in full swing this fall. So, as we recruit, why is it a good thing to serve on an extension board?
Board members can influence what our extension programs look like, and that impacts our communities. They can also be critical in securing local funding to support the programs. It's better to have local citizens requesting funds, rather than K-State Extension.
Personally, elected board members are likely to pick up leadership, teamwork, budgeting and problem-solving skills. There are many opportunities for professional development in our system. If desired, local board members can run for a position on the State Extension Advisory Council that works with extension administration.
Networking is a significant opportunity for board members. Getting to know folks in the community creates stronger relationships as you get to know local leaders and public officials, while working with affiliated organizations.
Overall, board members develop a sense of accomplishment and purpose in being part of the land-grant system. If you have questioned being on a board, I'd recommend the opportunity. And if you are recruiting individuals, convince them of the positive contributions that they can make.
It's a win for them and K-State Extension.
