CBS Sunday Morning: Striking a Power Pose

Submitted by Daryl Buchholz

Daryl Buchholz

The CBS Sunday Morning program is a favorite for my wife, Joyce, and I. If you've not watched, we find it refreshing in the human interest stories they provide.

This past Sunday's program included a story about Amy Cuddy, PhD, a social psychologist and Associate Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Her research and her focus is on body language and the role it plays in power, influence, nonverbal communication, and prejudice. She has studied both how body language provides meaning to others, and how your own body language affects how well you perform in various situations.  It is interesting and powerful story. You may be familiar with Amy Cuddy, because she did a TED talk that has had over 27 million views.

As an Extension professional, wouldn't it be great to always be at the top of your game any time you are going to be in front of an audience?  What I found most interesting were the "exercises" she suggested and how doing those exercises created greater personal confidence and success in being at the top of your game.   I'd encourage you to follow this link and watch the documentary on CBS Sunday Morning. You can also go to the TED talk she gave in 2012 and listen to it. Both will provide you as an Extension professional some simple suggestions that will improve your body language, increase your confidence in making presentations in all sorts of professional sessions.

Let me know what you think. And, have a great week.
