Diversity Programs Office Update

Submitted by Zelia Wiley

As the summer programming comes to a close and we prepare for new students, the College of AG/KSRE Diversity Programs Office would like to draw your attention to the following events:

• The 2017 MAPS program has concluded. The 2017 cohort worked diligently throughout the summer on their biofuels projects and showcased their research with poster presentations in the Engineering Hall Atrium on Wednesday, July 19. The MAPS program concluded with a closing banquet on Thursday, July 20, with Dr. Pat Bosco, family members and our corporate sponsors in attendance. We are very proud of our new College of Ag students and look forward to seeing them as incoming freshman this fall.

• K-State Research & Extension (KSRE) Summer Research Fellow program concluded Thursday, July 27, with oral presentations of student research conducted this summer. Our KSRE research fellows enjoyed their time at K-State. We look forward to seeing graduate school applications from some of the students. Our faculty mentors' time was greatly appreciated for summer that benefited all. Thanks for your support of our 2017 KSRE Fellows.

• 2017 Veryl Switzer/Nicodemus Camp was a success. This was the 10th annual camp and we hosted over 25 students from all over the nation. During the camp, we had a visit from Veryl Switzer who is considered the “Father of Minority Affairs” at Kansas State University. It was a pleasure to have him share his family history of Nicodemus, KS, experience in the National Football League (NFL) and work at Kansas State University. This year we were pleased to have our Kansas Junior MANRRS chapter members join the camp. This was the first year that we collaborated with the Office of Diversity Leadership Program "Urban Gardening" effort and it was a wonderful addition. Thanks to the Office of Diversity staff for your participation. It was an overall great experience for all with approximately 45 students and mentors.

• The 2017 Kompass program concluded on Wednesday, August 9, with a student services round robin and closing luncheon featuring Provost and Senior Vice President, Dr. April Mason. Students were given a comprehensive view of what to expect in the fall. We look forward to assisting these incoming freshmen during their educational journey at K-State. Certificates were presented at the end of the celebration with family and friends in attendance.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the College of Agriculture and KSRE for your support of all programs. Special thanks to Tiffany Carter, Simphony Guiden and our partnership with the Office of Diversity for our successful summer. Welcome back to the fall semester and Go CATS!!

We appreciate your support, please continue to look for more diversity events. For more information about upcoming events or to collaborate with the DPO, please contact Dr. Zelia Wiley at 785-532-5793 or by email at zwiley@ksu.edu.
