Diversity Programs Office Update

As the month of June has gone, and we are ready for the 4th of July holiday, the Diversity Programs Office (DPO) would like to draw your attention to the following events. We would also like to wish Dr. John Floros well in his new role as President of New Mexico State University and thank him for his continued support of our diversity efforts.

• Welcome to our student groups for the 2018 summer sessions. We are pleased they are here!

The 2018 MAPS program began on Friday, June 8. The 2018 cohort are working diligently throughout the summer on their classes and their sustainability research projects which will be showcased with poster presentations in the Engineering Hall Atrium on Wednesday, July 18. For their onsite industry visits, the MAPS cohort, Class XII have visited the Cargill Innovation Center in Wichita, KS and Phillips 66 in Bartlesville, OK. They will have campus visits from Ardent Mills and Hormel in July. The MAPS program will conclude with a closing banquet on Thursday, July 19, at 6 p.m. in the K-State Student Union. Jr. MANRRS were here on Tuesday, June 26. There were 30 students from Shawnee County (Topeka, KS) who came to K-State. Thanks to the Food Science Institute (FSI) faculty and K-State Diversity and Multicultural Student Affairs Office for this successful partnership.

• K-State Research & Extension (KSRE) Summer Research Fellow program began on Monday, June 4, with an orientation with administrators and research mentors. They are working conscientiously on their research with their mentors and will showcase their findings with oral presentations on Thursday, July 26, in Waters Hall, Room 137. This group has also had the opportunity to visit the Riley County CES office to learn about this KSRE’s outreach in the county. Thanks to Dr. Gregg Hadley, Associate Director for Extension, for serving as their host on this trip.

This year’s theme is "Moving Kansas Forward: Teaching, Advising, and Supporting Practices of Equity." Our keynote speakers this year, John Quinones of ABC News, and President Michael Middleton and Dr. Julie Middleton, of Lincoln University and the University of Missouri, respectively, who are internationally known for their work in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism within the media and within institutions of higher education, and for building bridges of understanding and mutual respect.
