The Community Health Corner

Submitted by Elaine Johannes

According to the CDC, community health uses science-based approaches for the greatest health benefit to the greatest number of people by addressing social, economic and structural drivers that impact health. Changes in policies, systems and environments, settings are among the most effective ways to tackle big health issues. Being healthy is not just about individual choices, it’s also about the conditions that influence everyone’s health.

ACCESS NOW: The Brother, You're on My Mind Toolkit was developed by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to educate fellow fraternity brothers and community members on depression and stress in African American men.

LEARN NOW: The Kansas Health Foundation has produced a short video, Pandemic Exposes Digital Divide in Kansas, that tells the story of two Kansas communities that coped with inadequate internet access during the pandemic. The video cites data from a Kansas Health Institute report, Variations in Internet Access Across Kansas (February 2021).

USE NOW: Everyone 12 years of age and older is now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccination. CDC offers resources to how to talk with young people about COVID-19 vaccines. Widespread vaccination is a critical tool to help youth and families return to and maintain their usual activities.
