The Community Health Corner
The National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being recommends using community development strategies and health literacy programs to ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. The following resources help us improve well-being for all, and achieve Healthy Kansas 2030 and Healthy People 2030 objectives.
National Rural Health Day is November 16: National Rural Health Day is intended to raise awareness about health care disparities in rural areas, and foster a sense of community and appreciation for those who work tirelessly to address these challenges. Resources to recognize the day include a promotional toolkit (posters, maze, word search, and coloring sheet!) and Walk with a Doc community activities. Check out the interactive data infographic of barriers to rural health here.
Governor’s Conference on the Future of Water in Kansas, November 15-16, Manhattan, KS: This annual conference attracts hundreds of attendees, including state and congressional legislators, state and federal officials, organizations and citizens who share an avid interest in our state's water resources. Conference agenda and registration are available here.
What Works In Schools: This CDC initiative for school-based health has been shown to improve health behaviors and experiences, support mental health and reduce suicidality in schools. The program works by:
- Improving health education,
- Connecting young people to the health services they need, and
- Making school environments safer and more supportive.
A focus of What Works in Schools is changing school environments that help students feel connected to their peers and adults in their schools. This sense of connectedness and belonging have been shown to have long lasting impact on health and well-being. The What Works in Schools resources are here.
