The National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being recommends using community development strategies and health literacy programs to ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. The following resources help us improve well-being for all, and achieve Healthy Kansas 2030 and Healthy People 2030 objectives.
Preventing Diet-Related Disease Across the Lifespan: The National Academies for Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published the new Proceedings of a Workshop Dietary Patterns to Prevent and Manage Diet-Related Disease Across the Lifespan. The resource highlights an August 2023 Food Forum led public workshop that explored the state of the science on the linkages between dietary patterns and diet-related chronic disease across the lifespan. Workshop presenters looked at dietary assessment, novel biomarkers for assessing dietary quality, and how diet influences the developmental origins of chronic disease, as well as the multitude of modifiable influences on dietary patterns. Expanding Public Health Messaging: Join the Public Health Communications Collaborative on May 1st for Comms Crash Course: Developing and Producing Videos to Expand Public Health Messaging. Expert panelists will cover best practices for using video to broaden outreach, engage with diverse populations, and foster healthier communities. Register here.
Early Cancer Detection: Breast cancer causes more than 40,000 deaths in women each year in the United States, and screening mammograms have been shown to reduce breast cancer deaths. A new CDC Vital Signs study finds that only about 65% of women ages 50-74 are up to date with their mammograms. The CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, provides resources for women to locate free or low-cost breast and cervical cancer screenings. Services are available to people with low incomes who do not have insurance through state, tribe, and territory health departments. Learn more here.
