Rural Forestry Program Coordinator Recognized for the Second Time This Year

Submitted by Jason Hartman

For the second time this year, rural forestry program coordinator Ryan Armbrust has been nationally recognized for his outstanding leadership in forestry. In July, it was announced that Ryan Armbrust was awarded the Young Forester Leadership Award by the Society of American Foresters. Ryan was presented with that award at the SAF National Meeting in Denver, CO in September.

In October, Ryan was part of a group of Kansas Forest Service staff who organized a meeting of state forestry and US Forest Service staff from USFS Region 2 (KS, NE, CO, SD, and WY) with responsibilities around the areas of Forest Stewardship and Forest Legacy. The meeting was a great success with staff from across the western US having highly engaged discussions and observing high quality forestry work in northeast Kansas.

During the meeting, US Forest Service Region 2 Forest Stewardship Program Manager Matt Tuten made a surprise presentation. Matt presented Ryan with the Stewardship Forester Award for the Western US. Mr. Tuten described the award winner to be one who is recognized as giving “significant contributions to advancing forest stewardship and rural forestry assistance in their state, or states across landscapes, in the west and pacific islands." Nominations were solicited from all 17 western states and the pacific island territories. The winning nomination of Ryan reads in part; “He (Ryan) is consistently a positive forester who embodies being an amazing forester while being an advocate for landowners in active management.”

Congratulations Ryan for representing Kansas Forest Service, K-State Research and Extension, K-State, and the forestry profession so well!
