From the New Agent Coaching Team: New Agent Support Across K-State Extension

Submitted by Tara Solomon-Smith

Investing in New Professionals: Coaching and Collective Support Across K-State Extension

Our system continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting new agents through its New Agent Coaching Team—a collaborative effort that goes beyond the traditional mentor model. Now an established part of the onboarding process, this team-based approach ensures new professionals are welcomed with consistent, well-rounded guidance and connection.

"Serving on the New Agent Coaching Team has been a rewarding opportunity to build meaningful connections with colleagues while supporting new agents as they join our organization and grow into their roles. It's an honor to contribute to their journey by offering guidance, encouragement, and a sense of belonging," Kaitlyn Peine, Coach and Community Health and Wellness Agent, Douglas County.

Each year, 10–12 experienced agents from across the system serve as new agent coaches, helping new staff build confidence, navigate expectations, and connect with peers and resources. Through early outreach, monthly Zoom check-ins, regional gatherings, and ongoing mentorship, these coaches provide a solid foundation for personal and professional success.

But coaching is only one piece of the puzzle. Creating a positive experience for new agents takes everyone—from office teammates and specialists to regional and state-level staff. When the entire system commits to supporting new professionals, we foster stronger relationships, better retention, and a more unified organization.

A Shared Commitment, A Stronger System
Coaches may lead the way, but every interaction across our network shapes how new staff feel about their role and future with K-State Extension. A welcoming note, a quick check-in, or sharing a helpful resource all contribute to a culture of support and growth.

To help streamline this effort, Extension Operations recently launched a new website dedicated to professional development and onboarding resources. Whether you're a coach, supervisor, or colleague, you can explore tools, timelines, and best practices for supporting new agents on the Employee Resources website.

Together, we can ensure that every new agent not only finds their footing—but also feels they belong and have a future within the Extension family.
