The Community Health Corner
Submitted by Stephanie Gutierrez
In America’s Health Rankings report for 2024, Kansas is ranked number 28 of the 50 states in overall health of its residents. We need to raise that ranking which was once in the top 10! K-State Extension is working with others to improve everyone’s health, and we want all to join the effort. From urban, metro, suburban, rural and frontier locations, Extension works in partnership with communities to deliver meaningful, timely relevant programs and initiatives for health and well-being. The following resources help us improve well-being and achieve national Healthy People 2030 objectives.
Tendon Trouble: Finding a Fix for Injured Tissue
Tendons play a critical role in helping our bodies move, yet they are often overlooked until pain or injury occurs. A new NIH News in Health article explores how tendon injuries develop, why they are often slow to heal, and how repetitive movements and overuse can contribute to long-term tendon problems. The article also highlights current research aimed at improving tendon repair and shares practical tips to help protect tendons and reduce injury risk. Learn more here.
Early-life Nutrition
What we eat during pregnancy and early childhood may influence health outcomes decades later. A recent NIH Research in Context article explores how nutrition from conception through early life can shape long-term risks for conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. Drawing on evidence from natural experiments and long-term studies, the article highlights how even small dietary changes early in life can have lasting impacts, while also emphasizing that healthy choices at any age can still improve health outcomes. Support for Caregivers of Cancer Patients
Caring for someone with cancer can be both meaningful and overwhelming, and many caregivers put their own health and well-being last. A resource from the National Cancer Institute highlights the wide range of responsibilities caregivers may take on and emphasizes the importance of self-care, emotional support, and asking for help. It also offers practical tips for managing stress, maintaining personal health, and finding support, including guidance for long-distance caregivers. Learn more here.
