Power of Partnership

Submitted by Denise Sullivan

Healthy You

Modifiable health-related behaviors are leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Smoking, poor diet, physical inactivity, and alcohol consumption have been identified as particularly important risk factors, accounting for over a third of all deaths in the United States in 2000.

Are you wanting to make some healthy lifestyle choices like losing weight, exercising more or quitting smoking? Leverage the power of partnerships in reaching your goals. Research shows that people are significantly more likely to improve their own behavior if a ‘buddy’ becomes healthy in the same area. Working together towards a common goal not only supports motivation, it also makes it easier to create an environment at home or at work that supports your efforts--like not buying tempting snacks and taking activity breaks instead of smoke breaks.
