Financial Empowerment: Your Money, Your Goals

Financial empowerment is the knowledge and ability to manage money and use financial services and products to reach goals. Kansas families are doing OK when it comes to some measures of financial knowledge, skills, and behaviors. On other measures, we are not doing as well.

Results from the National Financial Capability Study (2015) show that more than half of respondents from Kansas were unable to correctly answer more than three of five questions covering everyday aspects of economics and personal finance. Kansas ranks 40 out of 51 states when it comes to the percentage of households that have a mainstream financial account but use alternative and often costly financial services for basic transaction and credit needs (CFED Assets and Opportunity Scorecard, 2013). More than half of Kansas households would not be able to cover expenses for three months if they experienced sickness, job loss, or other disruption to their income (National Financial Capability Study, 2015).

Your Money, Your Goals, developed by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), is a financial empowerment toolkit designed for you and your community partners as you work with individuals and families to:
• Make spending decisions that can help them reach their financial goals
• Order and fix credit reports
• Reduce debt
• Avoid tricks and traps as they chose financial products.

The Family Resource Management Program Focus Team (FRM PFT) invites you to learn more about this resource by attending a professional development training led by Michigan State University assistant professor and Extension specialist Dr. Erica Tobe.

The purpose of this training opportunity is to provide you with,
• An orientation to Your Money, Your Goals, a financial empowerment toolkit for Social Services programs developed by Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)
