Diversity Programs Office Update
The Diversity Programs Office (DPO) in the College of Agriculture is dedicated to providing and promoting leadership opportunities, understanding, goodwill, diversity and friendship among students, staff and faculty in the College of Agriculture and K-State Research and Extension. Read below to find out more about the activities and events that help us implement the office’s mission:
• Dr. Zelia Wiley received the 2017 Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Legend Award at the 32nd Annual MANRRS National Conference in Pittsburgh, PA, this past weekend. “This award recognizes the Advisor that has gone over and beyond to support her chapter members and chapter activities.” Dr. Wiley chartered the K-State MANRRS Chapter and has served as the chapter advisor for over 12 years. She was nominated for this award by Tiffany Carter, Ph.D. Graduate Student in the Department of Agronomy. Carter noted the success of the K-State Chapter and the Diversity Programs Office in the College of Agriculture under Dr. Wiley, in her nomination letter.
Dr. Wiley was at the conference with four members from the K-State Chapter and co-advisor Dr. Terri Blackmon. Students who attended were able to participate in workshop sessions, the career fair, student competitions, and heard from numerous speakers prominent in agriculture and agriculture-related fields.
• The Developing Scholars Program is hosting its 17th Annual Research Poster Symposium on Sunday, April 9. Guests can attend the event from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. in the Union Ballroom. Melissa Riley, senior in Animal Science & Industry; and Ingrid Silva, freshman in Feed Science; will be presenting their research at the event. Both students are members of MANRRS and Ingrid participated in the 2016 MAPS Summer Bridge Program.
• Members of the K-State MANRRS Chapter will have a booth at the Student Diversity Summit which will take place on Wednesday, April 5, in the K-State Student Union courtyard from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. This event is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences Diversity Committee and College of Arts and Sciences Ambassadors.
The summit will focus on understanding cultural competencies at K-State and highlighting why this understanding is vital to the creation of an inclusive environment. Featuring student speakers and an interactive panel discussion, the event is open to all students, faculty, staff and members of the community.
