June is National Safety Month

Submitted by Sandra Hoffman

CARES

The National Safety Council (NSC) reports, workplace fatalities are on the rise. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data for 2015, U.S. workplace fatalities have increased again. The total number of on-the-job deaths in 2015 was the highest since 2008. As a demonstration of our commitment to combat this trend, the College of Agriculture’s Environmental Health and Safety Office is launching the “CARES” messaging program. Our message will serve as our fundamental approach in meeting the health, safety, and environmental challenges within our College.

In commemoration of national safety month, the “CARES” program is joining forces with the NSC, “SafeAtWork” pledge. During the month of June, all faculty and staff are encouraged to take the pledge to be safe at work. Please join workers around the nation that have pledge to:

• Never compromise my own safety or the safety of my co-workers to get the job done,
• Actively look for hazards, promptly report them, and take appropriate action to warn others, and
• Be a good safety role model for my friends and family even when off the job.

Get involved. It is easy. Go to http://www.nsc.org/act/events/Pages/Safe-at-Work-Pledge.aspx, to take the pledge. The NSC will email you your certificate. You can display this certificate in your work area. “Doing your part today can help save a life tomorrow – maybe even your own.” (NSC)
