K-State Alumni Shares Experiences on Recent “Something to Chew On” Podcast

Jay Weeks is a recent doctoral graduate from the College of Agriculture at Kansas State University where his research focused on soil chemistry.

Weeks joined the Global Food Systems Initiative at K-State early in its relaunch and has been instrumental in the development of the “Something to Chew On” podcast.

In the latest episode, “The Future of Food: Food Systems, Podcasts and Farewells,” Weeks was interviewed about his experience as a student, the expansion of information sharing at K-State through podcasting, and his personal and professional development during his time here.

“My interest in food stems from visiting my grandparents’ dairy farm as a child. I got to see and participate in their farming activities,” said Weeks.

Weeks said he knew he wanted to make an impact and found an interest in chemistry and soil fertility. “I found that I could marry soil and chemistry to make progress in other parts of the world.”

The Global Food Systems podcast was launched on January 15, 2019 and now includes 15 episodes. The podcast features researchers from varied disciplines and areas of interest including food safety, maternity and child nutrition, food as art and experience and many more. With listeners in more than 30 countries and almost 2,500 downloads, the podcast seeks to explore the complexity and nuance of the global food system, celebrate the progress we have made, and debate the best ways for humans to proceed into the future.

The Kansas State University Global Food Systems Initiative works to achieve university-wide goals in solving global food challenges through innovation, outreach, and workforce development.
