Kansas 4-H Summer Engagement Internship Program

Submitted by Rick Peterson

This summer, there will be 90 interns employed through the Extension 4-H Summer Engagement Grant program.

Interns and agents supervising them attended internship training May 29-30 in Wichita. Sixty-nine counties (including 17 districts and 17 independent counties) will be providing youth educational programming through this project.

Training introduced interns to the overall goals of the grant, program implementation and management, including risk management practices. Interns were provided with curriculum, materials and supplies, and hands-on training of curriculum activities. Training included how to evaluate and report their program outcomes.

Interns also met with their respective engagement agent, who will provide support to the interns as they prepare and implement their educational programming. The program will begin in June and continue through the summer months.

During the summer program, 4-H interns will lead learning for youth in grades K-12 in the areas of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math), Agriculture and Natural Resources, Creative Arts, Family and Consumer Science, and Personal Development.

This general offering of project-based learning opportunities will complement efforts already in place within the Kansas formal education system.

Another strength of the program comes from the engagement of community stakeholders in the partnership process. The project’s intent is to utilize collaboration with such community partners as schools, summer school providers and day camp providers.

Thanks goes out to participating county agents for accepting, hosting and providing supervision of interns.

If you know of any local youth who would like a fun educational experience this summer, please refer them to one of the participating counties or districts. This is a great opportunity for non-4-H youth to get exposure to what extension has to offer.
