Foundations of Youth Development and 4-H Program Management

Trinity Lutheran Church – Salina

This training replaces Basic 4-H Operations in the New Agent Training Schedule and has been expanded to help agents strengthen their specialization in youth development. Extension professionals will gain the knowledge, skills and competencies to be effective in planning and delivering youth development programs that support the overall mission of KSRE. Participants will also learn strategies for how to effectively manage the 4-H program in their local units.

Educational Objectives and Key Topics:
The training is designed to introduce participants to the foundations of positive youth development and to effectively apply and incorporate good management practices to the 4-H program. Topics include how to:

• Recognize and address developmental needs and strengths in youth
• Create quality experiences for young people
• Understand, value and intentionally work with new youth and adult audiences
• Create and strengthen youth and adult partnerships
• Implement safety and risk management practices with youth audiences and programs
• Engage volunteers to expand youth development programs
• Manage a 4-H program efficiently and effectively

Who Should Attend:
• Extension Agents with 4-H Youth Development responsibilities,
• Agent Assistants, Program Assistants, Program Coordinators that have youth development responsibilities or are working in a school or community setting.
• All new Extension agents with 50% or more 4-H youth development responsibilities
• Extension agents interested in strengthening their specialization in youth development, and
• Local Extension Professionals/Administrators with limited 4-H background (at the discretion of area directors).
