Diversity Programs Office Update

The Diversity Programs Office would like to share some information about our events for the beginning of the Spring Semester:

• We would like to thank our guest speaker, Dr. Freddie Richards, for kicking off MLK Week at Kansas State University last night at the Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Diverse Student Leader Reception. This event is hosted by the Diversity Programs Office, MANRRS and was sponsored by John Deere.

• The DPO welcomes all students within the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, and Business to meet with Cargill representatives today, January 26, in 137 Waters Hall at 6 p.m. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

• The DPO also invites all interested students to attend the K-State MANRRS Chapter Corporate Showcase featuring Hormel foods and Seaboard foods on Wednesday, January 27, in 106 Waters Hall. Pizza and refreshments will be provided.

• Here is a list of the remaining events on campus for Martin Luther King Jr Observance Week:

Tuesday, January 26
• K-State Student Leader Diversity Conversation hosted at the Alumni Center at 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
• Commerce Bank Presidential Award for Diversity will be held in the Alumni Center at 3:30 in banquet rooms A & D.

Wednesday, January 27
• The 17th Annual College of Business Diversity Lecture will be in Forum Hall in the K-State Union from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Michael Gonzales is speaking this year.
• The 2nd Annual Civil Rights Teach-in will be “Addressing the State of Civil Rights.” This event will be held in the Leadership Studies Building, in Town Hall.
• The Annual MLK Program and Candlelight Vigil, is the oldest MLK event held on K-State's campus. This event will be hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and its keynote speaker will be Dr. Timothy Askew, who’s an English professor at Clark-Atlanta University. Following the vigil there will be a Hot Chocolate Reception in the lobby of Forum Hall.

Thursday, January 28
• The MLK Week Fellowship Luncheon will be over the Civil Rights Matinee featuring the stories told from the Freedom Seekers of the western Underground Railroad. The luncheon's cost will be $10 per person and it will be held in the K-State Alumni Center. The event will start at 11:30 a.m. will end at 1:30 p.m.
• The Beach Art Museum will be hosting the Hard Truths Revisited in the Work of Two African American Artists. The theme for this year is “A Forum on Art, Politics of Difference.” The series will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the UMB Theater.

Friday, January 29
• The Black Faculty & Staff Alliance and Alianza Social Justice Brown Bag Luncheon will start at 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. in the K-State Alumni Center in the Purple Pride Room.
• The Laying of the Wreath and Bell Chimes Ceremony will begin in the front of the MSO at 1:45 p.m. and will proceed to the Ahearn Field House ending at the MLK bust.
