Diversity Programs Office Update

Submitted by Zuleica Gerardo and Zelia Wiley

The Diversity Programs Office and the K-State MANRRS Chapter had a very busy week this past week with the MANRRS National Conference and other events on campus. Read below about the recent success our students and office have enjoyed:

• Congratulations to the K-State Chapter of MANRRS on successfully completing the 31st Annual National MANRRS Conference in Jacksonville, FL. Zuleica Gerardo, Senior in Parks Management and Conservation, was awarded 3rd place in the Oral Research - Division II for her research entitled “Imagining Nature: How People of Color Experience the Great Outdoors.” She represented us very well, so if you get a chance, feel free to stop by the Diversity Programs Office (DPO) and congratulate her.

Over 30 students from across the nation received applications for the 2016 KSRE Summer Research Fellowship Program. Frantina Williams and Kenyanna Jones were VIP Scholars of the conference, entailing breakfast with representatives from industry corporations to network due to their high GPA. Our very own Frantina Williams had an exclusive dinner with representatives from John Deere for an open position in their corporation, so we congratulate her and wait eagerly for updates!

• On Friday April 1, MANNRS had a booth at AG Fest, which was a great opportunity for students to network with leading companies such as Cargill and Seaboard Foods.

• During the annual Deans Advisory Board, Melissa Riley and Jessica Keane spoke to the Dean, faculty, students, and staff who attended about their recent research and internship experiences. We thank them for their willingness to speak to such an influential crowd and for representing MANRRS well.

• We would also like to recognize our Ag Student Council representative, Blain Thompson. He was the MANRRS representative in the Mr. Ag pageant. We appreciate his representation of our voices well and look forward to your successful endeavors within the council.

Please continue to look for more diversity events as we continue to advertise. We appreciate your support. For more information about upcoming events or to collaborate with the DPO, please call 785-532-5793 or contact Dr. Zelia Wiley, Interim Associate Provost of Diversity, zwiley@ksu.edu.
