Student Named George Washington Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Awardee

The Carver Birthplace Association’s (CBAs) First Dinner and Award Ceremony will be held on September 20, 2016 in St. Louis MO. The George Washington Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Award will be presented to Adriana Meneses from Kansas State University. Adriana Meneses is a junior majoring in Animal Sciences and Industry with a Bioscience/Biotechnology option. She is expected to graduate in May of 2018.

For the summer of 2016, Adriana interned with Cargill Turkey and Cooked Meats in California, MO. She has since been offered and accepted an internship with Cargill Meat Solutions in Schulyer, NE, for the summer of 2017. Adriana is also a member of Sigma Alpha Pi, a member from the 2014 class of the Multicultural Academic Program Success (MAPS) Bridge Program, Project IMPACT Scholar, and president of the K-State Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS) chapter, for the second consecutive year.

There are five Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Awardees in 2016 with one undergraduate student from Simpson College (Iowa), Iowa State University and Tuskegee University (representing the three Carver Higher Education Legacy Schools), and Lincoln University (Missouri) and Kansas State University (land grant universities in the two states where Carver completed his elementary and high school education). Collectively, these schools symbolize the Carver education and career journey.

The George Washington Carver Spirit of Innovation and Service Award selection criteria considered the following when choosing awardees:

· demonstrated determination and perseverance in pursuing their educational and life goals, including
· an awareness of the natural environment
· strong academic performance in a scientific degree program that focuses on teamwork and technology
· active involvement in research and professional ethics etc.
· demonstrated service to others for the betterment of diverse communities
· engagement in arts and humanities (e.g., music, painting, film, theater, creative writing, philosophy,
· represents the first generation in a family to attend college.
