Diversity Programs Office Update

Submitted by Phil LeBlanc

The Diversity Programs Office would like to share some information about recent events involving the office:

• We would like to begin by congratulating Melissa Riley, junior in Animal Sciences and Industry and a member of the K-State Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) Chapter, as she was crowned Miss Black & Gold at the scholarship pageant on Saturday, December 3, in the K-State Student Union. In addition to being crowned Miss Black & Gold, Melissa also won Miss GPA, Miss Career, and Miss Dedication. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship next spring for this accomplishment. The Miss Black & Gold pageant is sponsored by the Kappa Tau Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Melissa is the third MANRRS chapter member to win the crown in the 18 year pageant's history. In 2010, Ashley-Ann Cavazos, Agriculture Communications major, won the crown and Jocelyn Clemons, Agriculture Technology Management major, won in 2012. This is a great accomplishment for our chapter and the College of AG!

• The Diversity Programs Office and the K-State Minorities in Agriculture, in Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS) chapter assisted with the Koch/Cargill College for a Day on Saturday. High school students from Kansas City and Wichita visited campus and heard from representatives with the College of Agriculture, College of Business, Office of Admissions, and the Office of Diversity. In the portion dedicated to the College of Agriculture, students participated in “College of Agriculture Jeopardy.” After completing all of the scheduled activities, the students enjoyed some Call Hall ice cream and attended the Annual Miss Black and Gold Pageant before returning home.

• MANRRS is holding their annual study hall before finals in 137 Waters Hall each night this week from 7-10 p.m. Snacks are available to those who attend. The office would like to send a big thank you to Cargill for sponsoring this event.

Please continue to look for more diversity news and events as we continue to advertise. We appreciate your support. For more information about upcoming events or to collaborate with the DPO, please call 785-532-5793 or contact Dr. Zelia Wiley, Interim Associate Provost of Diversity, zwiley@ksu.edu.
