4-H License Plate for Kansas

Submitted by Jake Worcester

An official Kansas 4-H license plate is in the works! Members of 4-H community and project clubs will soon have an opportunity to vote on the final design. Proud Kansas 4-H alumnus, Representative Ken Rahjes from District 110, introduced the bill and Kansas 4-H Youth Leadership Council member Marissa Randel testified in support of the measure at the House Transportation Committee hearing. Since, the bill has progressed through the legislative process and was just approved in the legislature through the conference committee process and will soon head to the Governor’s desk for signature.

  • Design - Voting for the official license plate design will soon begin. We are finalizing design options and will email all Kansas 4-H project and community club leaders across the state to provide instructions on the voting process. You will receive the same email information that’s sent to the leaders in advance, so you will be able to answer questions.

  • Donation - Like other distinctive license plates in the state, those wanting a clover license plate will support Kansas 4-H with a $50 annual tax deductible contribution in addition to regular registration fees and taxes. There will also be an additional one-time plate charge the first year of approximately $50. Revenue generated by the donation will support 4-H at the county and state level as specified below:

    • $10 to the county 4-H program of registration (counties will receive annual payments)
    • $30 to the Kansas 4-H Program for marketing and growth initiatives
    • $10 to support Kansas 4-H Foundation initiatives

  • Commitments - Before the license plates can be made available, we must obtain 500 commitments from around the state to purchase the plates. We will ask 4-H programs around the state to encourage local residents to come to our website and register their commitment.

Once the 500 needed commitments are obtained (less than 5 per county!) and voting for the design is complete, the Kansas 4-H Foundation will submit a deposit to the Kansas Department of Revenue to begin production. If we are able to secure all 500 of our commitments by July 1, the plate should be available starting January 1, 2018. If we are later than that, it may push the availability back later into 2018.

If you have questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out. This is an exciting and fun development, and just one of many ways we are looking to grow the 4-H brand in Kansas!
