Diversity Programs Office Update

Submitted by Zelia Wiley

Hopefully you are enjoying the spring! Here are some events that the Diversity Programs Office would like to bring to your attention. The following is what we have been doing and what we have coming up for the following weeks:

• On April 4 through April 7, we took 10 students to the 2018 National MANRRS Career Fair and Training Conference in Greensboro, NC. It was a rewarding experience for all who attended as they learned to foster and promote inclusion, meet professionals in their chosen fields, interview with interested organizations, and to develop leadership skills. We had such great success and hope to attend again next year.

o The students who attended were as follows: Jordan Bailey, Makinsey McIntosh, Marie Armstrong, Hector Rojas, Eric Valenzuela, Lonnie Hobbs, Jr., Jessica Keane, Tiffany Carter, Adriana Meneses, and Cameron Bradshaw.

• We also had quite a few awards given out to students in MANRRS!

o Cameron Bradshaw – 2017 George Washington Carver Innovation Award
o Eric Valenzuela – 2nd place Poster Competition
o Makinsey McIntosh – 3rd place Poster Competition
o Hector Rojas – 4th place Undergraduate Essay Contest
o Lonnie Hobbs Jr. – Agricultural Economics. Elected the 2018-19 Region 4 National Society of MANRRS Graduate Student Vice President
o Tiffany Carter, PhD candidate elected 2018-19 National Society of MANRRS graduate Student president

• On April 16, we had Growing our Mindset-Part 2: Why Diversity Matters in the College of AG. It was a successful discussion led by Zelia Wiley, Assistant Dean; Carlene Hawkins, corporate HR at Cargill; and closed by Associate Dean Dr. Don Boggs. Many factors of inclusion, diversity, and initiative within the College of Agriculture were brought up and discussed at this meeting. Although, it was a small turn out, we acquired great feedback and questions from the students who attended.

• Congratulations to the 2018-19 MANRRS Executive Board and we send appreciation to Makinsey McIntosh, outgoing chapter president and her executive board.
