2020 Community Engagement Symposium "Student Success and the Public Good" Registration Open and Call for Proposals Announced

Submitted by David Procter

Kansas State University's 2020 Community Engagement Symposium will be held on March 23-24, 2020, at the K-State Alumni Center. The symposium theme is “Student Success and the Public Good.”

As a land grant university, Kansas State University works to improve the conditions of Kansans and communities worldwide. However, the relationship of students’ success at K-State to the improvement of our local and global communities is rarely made, explored or discussed. The 2020 Community Engagement Symposium focuses on this relationship.

The symposium will explore topics such as, “What impact does curricular or co-curricular work have on community?” “What high impact teaching strategies contribute to the public good?” “What ‘turning points’ have students experienced that motivated them to engage with others in solving community challenges?” and “What does ‘success’ look like for a student that has made the public good a focus of their curriculum?”

These and other student success topics will serve as symposia topics for faculty, staff, student, and community presenters. Please consider submitting an abstract for presentation on one of these or a related student success topic. Multiple presentation formats are available, but we request that you send us your proposal as soon as possible, and no later than January 31. Review teams from the symposium steering committee will evaluate submissions for their originality, creativity, and potential to excite and inform audiences. We are especially interested in interactive sessions. Selections will be finalized and announced February 14.

Thank you for your ideas!

PECHAKUCHA: Student presenters only!

K-State students as well as students from regional colleges, trade schools, and universities are encouraged to participate or present at the 2020 Community Engagement Symposium. Student presenters will present in a lively PechaKucha session – 20 slides, 20 seconds per slide. The presentation may be made by one or two persons and may have any title, but should address the questions
• What is ‘student success’?
• What is ‘the public good’?
• How has my student success at K-State contributed to the greater public good?

To register for the symposium, please visit https://www.k-state.edu/cecd/2020-engagement-symposium/index.html.

All presenters must register and pay the symposium registration fee. Student registration fees are waived, but students must still register.

To submit a proposal, please visit https://www.k-state.edu/cecd/2020-engagement-symposium/callforproposals.html.
