Shout Out: State Fair FCS Judging Contest Planning Committee

Submitted by Gregg Hadley

Our Northeast Regional 4-H Youth Development Specialist Diane Mack has this week’s Shout Out. Diane wrote:

“I would like to nominate the Kansas State Fair Family and Consumer Sciences Judging contest planning committee for a Shout Out.

The planning committee consisted of Shandi Andres, K-State Research and Extension Flint Hills District; Susie Latta, K-State Research and Extension Marshall County; Becky Reid, K-State Research and Extension Cowley County; and Ashley Svaty, K-State Research and Extension Post Rock District. They transformed the in-person contest into a virtual contest using Qualtrics (https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9WUMrwX4Rdy7PUh).

Due to the fact that COVID-19 caused many contests to be canceled, the online contest was open to any 4-H youth ages 9-18 to introduce them to the Family and Consumer Sciences Judging. The contest attracted 220 participants (127 Intermediates and 93 Seniors) representing 16 districts and 22 counties. 54 individuals shared that this was their first time to judge an FCS contest.

The contest committee took advantage of Qualtrics with the auto-scoring feature and automated feedback via email. Here's a response from a parent:

‘I can't tell you how pleased I am as a parent that there will be correct answers given. That is so exciting for me. As a young 4-H’er years ago I never could figure out what I got wrong or why, or why I did well sometimes and not others. This feedback that is to come in 24 hours is really great. Thank you for providing it. The kids will surely benefit untold times more this way.’ "

Shandi, Susie, Becky, and Ashley – thanks for all that you do for the people we serve, your colleagues, and K-State Research and Extension!

If you know of a colleague or team of colleagues that deserve a Shout Out for doing something exceptional, please send their name(s) and the reason for the Shout Out to ghadley@ksu.edu.
