The Community Health Corner
The National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being recommends using community development strategies with health literacy programs to ensure that everyone has a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. The following resources help us improve well-being for all and achieve Healthy Kansas 2030 and Healthy People 2030 objectives.
Air Quality: Intense heat waves have harmful effects on air quality – putting people and animals at risk. Public Health Communications Collaborative (PHCC) resource, Protect Your Health: Understanding Air Quality, will help you communicate about air quality and protective measures people can take to stay safe. Download and share the guide with your community to promote the importance of understanding air quality and protecting your health. Understanding Air Quality is available in English and Spanish.
Hearing Aids: Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health reports the results of a new study published in Lancet that older adults at greater risk of dementia may be able to decrease their risk of cognitive decline by nearly half by using hearing aids. Listen to the 17:14min Public Health On Call podcast about the results of the study and its relevance to health care for older adults.
Gun Data from the CDC: Data released from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that guns remained the leading cause of death for children and teens in 2022. The rate of gun deaths among this group climbed 87% in the last decade (2013-2022). The report was released June, 2023 and includes evidenced-based policy recommendations to address this health issue.
