The Community Health Corner
Submitted by Stephanie Gutierrez
In America’s Health Rankings report for 2024, Kansas is ranked number 28 of the 50 states in overall health of its residents. We need to raise that ranking which was once in the top 10! K-State Extension is working with others to improve everyone’s health, and we want all to join the effort. From urban, metro, suburban, rural and frontier locations, Extension works in partnership with communities to deliver meaningful and relevant programs and initiatives to keep health closer to home. The following resources help us improve well-being, achieve Healthy People 2030 objectives and follow recommendations included in the National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being
Reducing Environmental Risks to Children's Health:
The American Public Health Association’s Children’s Environmental Health Committee (CEH) has launched a valuable toolkit to support public health professionals in their guest lecturing efforts. The toolkit features a comprehensive 100-minute lesson plan along with a range of resources designed to enhance teaching on environmental health issues affecting children. This resource is an excellent opportunity for professionals to engage with students, raise awareness, and promote collaborative efforts in reducing environmental risks to children's health in their homes, schools, and communities.
Upcoming RWJF Webinars: Food Access & Restorative Solutions:
Join the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Systems for Action National Program (S4A) for two upcoming webinars:
- September 10th, Systems in Focus Panel | Food as Medicine: Join a panel of S4A investigators whose research has examined the intersection of food access, nutrition and health equity.
- September 24th, Trust Based Philanthropy with Restorative Community Solutions: Learn more about a peer-led, cohort-based capacity-building model designed to strengthen the infrastructure, leadership, and systems engagement of grassroots organizations led by people with lived experience of incarceration.
Tax Policies and Population Health
On September 29th, join the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement for a VIRTUAL one-day workshop that explores how tax policies at different levels of government affect population health. This National Academies of Sciences Engineering, and Medicine event will include presentations about tax policies along the life course – from early childhood to retirement – and how the resulting economic effects shape the vital conditions for health and well-being.
