Small Notes, Big Impact: Why Shout Outs Matter

Submitted by Carla Nemecek

With the 2025 Kansas State Fair in the history books, now seems like a good time to appreciate the good work of our colleagues across the state.

This fair was especially meaningful as it was my last State Fair to stand ringside as a parent, with appreciation for the growth and learning my family has gained through 4-H.

The years go fast. Maybe that’s why I find myself especially grateful this week, and why a “shout out” to all of our extension colleagues feels so fitting. The fair truly is a showcase of Kansas 4-H youth, but behind the scenes, it is also a showcase of the people who make K-State Extension special.

That’s what the Tuesday Letter Shout Out is all about. It’s our electronic thank-you system, developed as a way to recognize colleagues who go above and beyond. Whether it’s an office professional, mentor, agent, program assistant or specialist, we all have someone who has made our jobs easier or our local units better.

Submitting a Shout Out is simple:

• Email your nomination to ksreshoutout@ksu.edu.
• Subject line: Type “Shout Out.”
• Content: Include the name(s) of the person or team you’re recognizing.
• Justification: Provide a short explanation of what they did and why it mattered.

A good Shout Out is specific, highlights impact and expresses your genuine appreciation. You can also recognize entire teams when collaboration makes the difference. Most importantly, be timely. Recognition means the most when it comes soon after the effort. It’s a small gesture with a big impact, and a great way to keep our system connected and appreciated.

Consider this my submission of a high-five to our extension colleagues who helped to make the 2025 Kansas State Fair a success. Many of you left early to haul exhibits to the fair, spent a weekend helping with contests, and shared many words of encouragement with young people. Thank you!
