The Value of Organizational Involvement

Submitted by Cade Rensink

Just as we have done for the last 111 years, extension agents continue to play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the universities and communities we serve. Whether focusing on agriculture, youth development, family and consumer sciences, or community vitality, we passionately work to not only educate, but to also empower the public.

As an agent, one of the most beneficial steps you can take to enhance your career and job effectiveness is to be involved in an extension professional organization.

These organizations offer a wide range of professional development opportunities. From local workshops and national conferences to online webinars, members gain access to cutting-edge research, innovative teaching methods, and practical tools you can apply in your day-to-day work. These offerings help you stay informed about emerging trends and best practices in your respective fields.

Networking is another significant benefit. Within an organization, agents connect with peers from across the state, country, and even internationally. These connections foster collaboration, encourage the exchange of ideas, and often lead to partnerships in programming or other projects.

Creating this network can prove to be very valuable for early career success while the lasting friendships within your network make the many years on the job all worth it.

Being part of a professional community also creates a sense of camaraderie, identity and pride – being part of something bigger. It builds a shared appreciation of mission and values, a collective history and tradition of service, and a platform for celebrating the uniqueness of being an extension agent.

Moreover, membership allows for abundant leadership opportunities and often includes access to scholarships, awards and grants that recognize merit and support continued education. These resources not only reward dedication but also encourage agents to pursue advanced training and novel programming.

Since we’re all at annual conference this week, there is no better time to join one or more of the active organizations within K-State Extension. For more information, you can visit the KSRE Employee Resources page for a listing of the groups. Or, better yet, just pop into one of their meetings over the next couple of days.

In a profession centered on education and community support, it is extremely important for us to invest in our personal growth and career readiness. Your local unit can cover the investment of dues. However, it’s up to you to invest the time.

I encourage you not to view your involvement simply as a resume builder. Rather, it should be seen as making a commitment to excellence, collaboration and service.
