Diversity Programs Office Update

Welcome back students! The Diversity Programs Office (DPO) would also like to welcome back its staff: Phil Leblanc, Graduate Assistant; Zuleica Gerardo, Undergraduate Assistant; and Dillon Evans, Undergraduate Assistant. We are excited and energized for what is to come this spring semester.

Having just celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we wanted to remind you of the events taking place on campus for MLK Week.

Monday January 25

• The Diversity Programs Office and the K-State MANRRS Chapter are hosting the 12th Annual College of Agriculture Diversity Student Leader Reception at 5:30 p.m. in 137 Waters Hall. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Freddie L. Richards, professor and immediate past dean of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences at Prairie View A& M University.
• The Diversity Canvas Kickoff is a campus community competition in the form of mixed media panels that are up for display on the K-State Student Union construction walls. The works will reflect awareness of and life experiences associated with diversity issues.

Tuesday, January 26

• K-State Student Leader Diversity Conversation hosted at the Alumni Center in the Tadtman Ballroom from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
• Commerce Bank Presidential Award for Diversity will be held at the Alumni Center in Banquet Room A & D at 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, January 27

• The 17th Annual College of Business Diversity Lecture will be in Forum Hall in the K-State Union from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Michael Gonzales, leader of corporate diversity and inclusion at Hallmark, is speaking this year.
• The 2nd Annual Civil Rights Teach-In, hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences, will be “addressing the state of civil rights.” This event will be held in the Town Hall in the Leadership Studies Building.
• The Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Lecture and Candlelight Vigil is the oldest MLK event held on campus. The event is hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and will feature keynote speaker Dr. Timothy Askew, English professor at Clark-Atlanta University. The event will be held in the K & S Ballroom in the K-State Student Union and will be followed by a Hot Chocolate Reception in the Forum Hall Lobby.

Thursday, January 28

• The Martin Luther King Jr. Fellowship Luncheon, will go from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Alumni Center, banquet room A & D. The luncheon will feature the documentary, “Freedom Seekers: Stories from the Western Underground Railroad,” followed by the introduction and a Q&A with Film Director Gary Jenkins. The luncheon is $10 per person and the RSVP deadline is Friday, January 22nd.
• The Beach Art Museum will be hosting the Hard Truths Revisited in the Work of Two African American Artists. The theme for this year is “A Forum on Art, Politics of Difference.” The series will start at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in the UMB Theater.

Friday, January 29

• The Black Faculty & Staff Alliance and Alianza Social Justice Brown Bag Luncheon will run from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the K-State Alumni Center in the Purple Pride Room.
• The Laying of the Wreath and Bell Chimes Ceremony will begin in front of the Multicultural Student Organizations office at 1:45 p.m. and proceed to the Ahearn Field House, ending at the Martin Luther King, Jr. bust.
