Resources to Become a Better K-State Research and Extension Advocate

Submitted by Megan Macy

Last week, Daryl challenged each of us to communicate with our county commissioners, state legislators and other K-State Research and Extension stakeholders. Sometimes it is hard to “toot our own horn” and know what to say or where to start, especially for our board members and volunteers who may not spend every day working in extension. We crafted some talking points to help you tell our story and impact quickly, concisely and accurately - whether you are talking to your neighbor, county commissioner, state legislator or the media. These statements cover the following topics:

  • Why support K-State Research and Extension
  • Why support your local Extension office
  • K-State Research and Extension and the economy
  • Economic Value of K-State Research and Extension

Feel free to take these messages and make them your own. Provide specific examples of your programs and how they are addressing specific needs in your community. In addition to these generic statements, there are also some questions that can help you build your own advocacy talking points.

These talking points can be found on our Advocacy and Government Relations page under Employee Resources, http://www.ksre.k-state.edu/employee_resources/advocacy_govrelations.html.

If you have resources or have found other information that has helped you be a better advocate, send them my way. We can work together to build a toolkit that helps us share the importance of K-State Research and Extension better and more consistently.
