Rawlins County KSRE Receives the 2017 Organization Health Champion Award
Submitted by Janelle VanKooten
Rawlins County K-State Research and Extension received the Organization Health Champion award at the 2017 Kansas State of Wellness Symposium. Rawlins County Extension agents and projects have fostered a stronger connection with healthy foods through their school garden, and worked with students to incorporate the foods into their school meals. Rawlins County Extension has hosted a freewill donation dinner using their fresh produce, and donated extra, unused produce to the senior center. It has started the process of increasing access to healthy food and physical activity opportunities, while crafting supportive, local policies to build a vital and sustainable community for the future. The efforts have been led in a way where everyone in their community has a role and stake in this work in a true collaborative fashion.
The Kansas Alliance for Wellness is a statewide network of communities, organizations and individuals that are committed to improving the health of Kansans by creating healthy food and beverage environments. This project began in July 2013, and is led by the American Heart Association.
