The Community Vitality PFT has redesigned the former Board Leadership Series and created Welcome A-Board: Board Leadership Basics. Previously offered every Tuesday night in February, this board training is now available in a more on-demand, a-la-carte format to be presented by local Extension staff whenever there is a need.

Welcome A-Board is a program for local community-based elected or appointed boards to help board members and their organizations become more effective in their efforts. The following topics in each session are available to be offered as a group or as individual modules:

• Session 1: Roles and Responsibilities of Board Members/Effective Meetings
o Organized Groups – How Do They Function and What Is Your Role When Asked to Serve?
o Duties and Responsibilities of Non-Profit Board Members
o Organizing and Leading Productive Meetings
o Agendas to the Rescue!
o Basic Parliamentary Procedure

• Session 2: Understanding Fellow Board Members/Conflict Management
o Generations – Adapting Volunteers of Different Ages
o Behavioral Styles
o Managing Conflict in Groups

• Session 3: Financial Responsibilities, Fundraising, Legalities, and Ethics
o Financial Responsibilities of Boards
o Fundraising and Managing Grant Revenue
o Legal and Ethical Issues for Boards

• Session 4: Strategic Planning
o The Importance of Strategic Planning
o Designing a Strategic Planning Strategy – Part 1
o Designing a Strategic Planning Strategy – Part 2

The general public is directed to contact their local Extension office if they are interested in attending one or more of the lessons as an individual or board (https://www.ksre.k-state.edu/community/civic-engagement/boards-commissions.html).

To offer this program in your county or district, or for more information, please email the Community Vitality team at ksrecv@ksu.edu. Materials are housed on K-State’s online Canvas system so we know who is offering the lessons in order to support them and to follow up on evaluation. You’ll be added to the course so you can download the presentations and print the materials for your local audience as needed.
