College of Agriculture Diversity Programs Office Update

Submitted by Zelia Wiley

Greetings! We made it through this unique, challenging and rewarding fall 2020 semester. Congratulations to all -Spring, Summer and Fall- 2020 College of AG graduates. We are very proud of you!!

As we completed the semester, the College of AG Diversity Programs Office co-hosted the K-State MANRRS first ever daily virtual social hour. It was a way for all our students to take a break from their stressful finals week to end this interesting fall 2020 semester. Thanks to all members, Maria Kimzey, K-State MANRRS President, and the executive board for hosting each day. One of our final events was to participate in the Virtual Professional Agriculture Workers Conference (PAWC) hosted by Tuskegee University on December 6-8, 2020 with the theme “Disparities & Racial Injustices in Agriculture & Rural Communities: Ways Forward.” We are so pleased that our students were recognized at the conference and participated in the student competition of Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society Symposium. They are:

  1. Raymond Thomas, Agriculture Economics Graduate Student from Houston, TX presented with Dr. Zelia Wiley and Lonnie Hobbs, Jr. on the topic, “The Impact of Virtual vs. Non-Virtual Summer Research Program.” He won 1st Place! CONGRATULATIONS!!

  2. Brandon Green, Animal Sciences & Industry (ASI) freshman from Spring Hill, KS presented with Dr. Wiley and Lonnie Hobbs, Jr. on the topic, “An Assessment of the Success of the MAPS Program: College of AG Cohorts.”

  3. Dr. Zelia Wiley served as a session facilitator on student accomplishments and our own Lonnie Hobbs, Jr. was recognized for his accomplishments as a graduate student at an 1862 land grant institution.

Join me in congratulating our students as they represented our college at this prestigious conference for agricultural workers from around the USA.

Thanks again for all your support of our diversity and inclusion efforts. Whether we conducted a faculty/staff or student workshop or hosted student groups we are appreciative of the partnerships. We wish all of you a safe and healthy holiday season!!
