Trust: The Foundation of Leadership
Submitted by Regional Directors and Chris Onstad
Trust was the focal point of the first session in the Extension Foundation’s online professional development series last week. Unlike material resources, trust isn’t something that can be purchased or manufactured. It must be earned organically through consistent actions and behaviors that demonstrate reliability, competence and care for others.
In any organization – and especially within our extension community -- trust is a cornerstone. It underpins strong leadership, fosters healthy relationships and creates a positive office culture. When people trust their leaders and colleagues, they feel safe, respected and valued. This sense of security leads to a more productive work environment, where innovation and collaboration can thrive.
As we continue to develop our skills and leadership abilities, it’s crucial to remember that building trust is an ongoing process. It requires us to be intentional in our actions and transparent in our communications. Only by doing so can we create an environment where trust can flourish. The next time you have a staff meeting in your local unit, consider a conversation around trust with the anticipation that it will foster enhanced communication.
For those who missed the first session, we encourage you to join the next one on September 10, titled "Busy is a Choice." These sessions are free for KSRE professionals, and while they are not recorded, the insights gained are invaluable.
