Inspiring Excellence

Submitted by Carla Nemecek

A coach, in the context of extension professionals in Kansas, is someone who guides, supports and inspires others to reach their full potential — whether they are community members, youth, or fellow colleagues.

Much like our state motto, "Ad astra per aspera" coaching is about helping others navigate challenges and growing through the process. It’s not just about giving answers, but about empowering people to develop their skills, confidence and resilience to help them achieve their goals.

As extension professionals, we are in a unique position to coach others toward positive change. Whether it’s guiding novice gardeners in selecting the best tomato varieties for Kansas, helping 4-H youth prepare their record books for state judging, or offering tips to families on reducing kitchen expenses, coaching is at the heart of what we do.

For me, coaching often involves helping a local unit director create a budget they truly understand, or answering questions for a board chair new to their leadership role. There’s a special satisfaction in seeing someone gain confidence — whether it’s through mastering a process or navigating a challenging conversation.

These moments of growth are especially fitting as we enter this time of year. Late February is a season of preparation, where plans are made and seeds are metaphorically (and often literally) planted for success in the busy months ahead.

Coaching is more than sharing knowledge; it’s about creating a relationship built on trust and mutual respect. By asking thoughtful questions and offering constructive feedback, we can guide others to discover their strengths and solutions.

Of course, helping others isn’t without its challenges. Growth can feel slow at times, setbacks may test our patience, and even the best coach needs a little help from time to time. But when we fully embrace our roles as mentors and motivators, we empower individuals to thrive, build stronger communities, and drive extension’s mission forward for a brighter future in Kansas.
