Regional Rural Grocery Workshop in Parsons, Kansas
This week in Parsons, the second in a series of Regional Rural Grocery Workshops organized by the Center for Engagement and Community Development will be held at the Southeast Research and Extension Center. The first workshop in the series, held in Kingman, in September, set the tone for collaboration with KSRE while working with the Kingman County KSRE office. This workshop will be no exception with KSRE providing support to the Southeast Regional Rural Grocery Workshop in multiple ways.
The Nutrition, Health & Food Safety Agent for the Wildcat Extension District, Barbara Ames, will lead a session highlighting ways that rural grocery stores can encourage healthy eating habits and drive sales of healthy food in their stores. The Southeast Research and Extension Center will provide the facilities to host the workshop.
Additionally, partners from Kansas State University’s Engineering Extension, USDA Rural Development, Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. will participate in the workshop. The Center for Engagement and Community Development is excited to work with a local rural grocery store, McCune Farm to Market, for the catering of this event.
The intent of these workshops is to share information on programs and resources for rural grocery stores, including the Kansas Healthy Food Initiative, to provide regional networking opportunities for rural grocery store owners and managers and to learn from rural grocers how the Center for Engagement and Community Development can better serve their needs.
