Kansas 4-H Success at Western National Roundup

Submitted by Shannon Rogge

The Western National Roundup was held January 5-9 in Denver and Fort Collins, CO. This year Kansas 4-H had two teams and one individual participate bringing home great accolades for the state.

Douglas County 4-H Hippology Team- Lakyn Roehrich, Kassidy Schumann, Paige Soper and Claire Wilson- earned Reserve Champion accolades. The team received 2nd Judging, 3rd Exam, 4th Stations, and 5th Team Problems. Individually, Kassidy 1st and Lakyn 3rd in Judging; Kassidy 7th, Claire 9th, and Paige 10th in Exam; and Claire 6th in Stations.

Hippology is comprised of 4 phases- exam, stations, horse judging, and team problem- and helps 4-H members exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry.

Greenwood County 4-H Meats Judging Team- Luke Fankhauser, Brooke Gaines, Lyle Perrier – earned a third-place finish at the Colorado State University campus in Fort Collins. The team received 2nd Placing Classes, 2nd Retail Cut, 3rd Retail ID, and 4th Reasons. Individually, Lyle was 9th Overall and 2nd in Placing Classes, Brooke 12th Overall and 4th Reasons, and Luke 13th Overall and 10th Retail ID.

Meat judging involves the evaluation of livestock carcasses and meat wholesale cut classes. Youth look at characteristics including trimness and muscling factors, along with the overall quality of the meat. All of these factors combined will affect the final product consumers buy in the grocery store.

Butler County 4-H member, Cami Miler, had a successful trip participating in the Catch-a-Calf program bringing home the Grand Champion banner. Cami’s success includes Showmanship division winner, Market Class winner, Herdsmanship Award, 2nd place Production Phase division, 4th place Record Books, 4th place tie Speech and Interview division, 6th place tie for monthly reporting and sponsor relations.

Forty youth from Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming started the program with 36 exhibiting their project in Denver. The program begins the year prior with a sponsored calf, taking it home to feed and work with it, and then returns to Denver the following year with a market-ready steer. The steers are judged on production and carcass quality, while the participants are judged on showmanship, record books and a personal interview. The Grand and Reserve Grand Champion participants sell their steers at the Auction of Junior Livestock Champions held on the final Friday of the Stock Show.

Congratulations to all exhibitors both in Colorado and throughout the year that make the Western National Roundup one of their 4-H goals. Contests have already begun to determine who will represent Kansas in 2023.
