The Community Health Corner

Submitted by Stephanie Gutierrez

Community Health

Community health uses science-based approaches for the greatest health benefit to the greatest number of people by addressing the social, economic and structural drivers that impact everyone’s health. The National Extension Framework for Health Equity and Well-being recommends using community development practices to ensure that every person has the opportunity to "attain his or her full health potential" and no one is "disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of social position or other socially determined circumstances." The following tools and resources can be used to improve health equity and well-being by working with communities to achieve the nation’s Healthy People 2030 objectives.

ACT NOW: CDC has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to obtain comments and suggestions to update the CDC Framework for Program Evaluation in Public Health (CDC Evaluation Framework) and associated resources. CDC seeks to update the framework to align with changes in evaluation, public health and federal policies and practices since its 1999 inception. The deadline to submit feedback is January 30.

READ NOW: The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry's 2021 Annual Report is now live. This report features stories of collaboration with national, state, local and territorial partners to assess, reduce and prevent health effects related to environmental exposures. It also highlights our work on emerging initiatives in data modernization, environmental justice and health equity.

DISCOVER NOW: An article in the November issue of the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice details systematic review evidence supporting housing voucher programs. The Community Preventive Services Task Force (CPSTF) recommends tenant-based housing voucher programs to improve health and health-related outcomes for adults and to advance health equity. Health-related outcomes include housing quality and security, healthcare use, and neighborhood opportunities (e.g., lower poverty level, better schools). Read highlights from the paper or access the full-text document on The Community Guide website.
