Be Aware of HABs this 4th of July

Submitted by Abigail Crouse

Harmful algal blooms

Planning to enjoy your July 4th weekend near the lake? The recent rise in temperatures, coupled with increased sunlight, creates favorable conditions for the rapid growth of cyanobacteria, also known as harmful algal blooms (HABs), in lakes and other bodies of water. These blooms can produce toxins that pose a health risk to humans and animals if ingested or even inhaled. During the summer, it is particularly important to be aware of the potential presence of HABs and take steps to avoid exposure. Children, pets and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable.

Be observant of discolored water (particularly shades of green), the presence of surface scum and unpleasant odors. If any of these indicators are present, avoid contact with the water entirely. Look for posted signage that may warn of HABs and consult with local authorities if you have concerns. K-State’s Pollution Prevention Institute has created a helpful ‘Who to Call?’ list with contact information for water testing, reporting blooms and treating exposure to HABs. Additional resources and information can be found on the K-State Pollution Prevention Institute’s HABs website.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July!
