Upcoming Book Discussion During February FCS Update

Submitted by Lisa Newman

During February FCS Update, we will be offering a facilitated book discussion centered on the K-State First Book selection, "Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World" by Vivek Murthy. We invite you to keep an eye out for details when the February Update information is shared and consider joining us for this engaging conversation.

You do not need to have read the book to participate, though familiarity with it is always helpful. For those who would like their own personal copy, Elaine Johannes has a limited number available—please reach out to her directly while supplies last. You may also find the book through your local public library or via library apps for digital access.

"Together" explores the growing issue of loneliness and social disconnection and why human connection is foundational to our physical health, mental well-being, and community resilience. Drawing on research, real-world examples, and practical insights, the book connects strongly to Family and Consumer Sciences work—particularly in areas of mental health, family relationships, community engagement, and overall quality of life.

Spending an hour in this discussion will offer:

  • A shared understanding of how connection impacts health and well-being
  • Practical ideas you can reflect on for your Extension programming and outreach
  • A chance to engage with colleagues around a topic that resonates across ages, families, and communities

We hope you’ll consider joining us for a meaningful conversation that aligns well with our FCS mission and the K-State First experience. More details coming soon!
