Register for Adult Mental Health First Aid

Submitted by Sharolyn Jackson

Mental health issues affect all of society in some way, shape or form. It is estimated that one in five Americans will have a diagnosable mental disorder at some point in their lives.

Mental Health First Aid Training opportunities will be offered throughout the state in February/March for all KSRE employees. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an 8-hour course that teaches you how to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This training helps you identify, understand, and respond to signs of addictions and mental illnesses, and provides you with tools to help connect them to appropriate care.

Participants in this training will learn:
- Risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems.
- Information on depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, and addiction disorders.
- A five-step action plan to help someone developing a mental health problem or in crisis.
- Where to turn for help – professional, peer, and self-help resources.

Dates/Locations for Adult Mental Health First Aid Training:
February 19, Tuesday – Hutchinson
February 20, Wednesday – Abilene
February 21, Thursday – Colby
February 26, Tuesday – Parsons
February 27, Wednesday – Lawrence
March 5, Tuesday – Dodge City

Register Online by February 15: https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_ebM68kZqSlYSZk9.

If you want to learn more about MHFA training before registering, an “Introduction to Mental Health First Aid” overview session will be presented by Monica Walker, Grant County Agent and Certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor, on February 11 (3:15-4:15 p.m.) in the Bluemont Hotel Conference Room in Manhattan. This presentation will also be available via live-stream. Details will be provided prior to February 11.

This training is provided in partnership with the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas. While first preference will be given to KSRE employees, you may share the information and invite local board members and community partners.
